DRESCRIPTION: The El Mirador expedition is undoubtedly the most exciting experience in the Mayan world for visitors that truly love the mystic of archaeology or the feeling of being in places where they can experience the same sensation as ancient explorers did. The Bec river area is the location of the El Mirador archaeological site, where the rain forest hides temples, palaces and burial grounds of the first of the greatest Mayan cites. Day 1 Peten Area-Carmelita A two and a half hour dirt road trip toward the northern part of the country to the “chiclero” (rubber and gum harvesting) community, Carmelita ecological lodge. Lunch and free afternoon. Dinner and lodging. Day 2 Carmelita-Camp in the rainforest (aguada El Ramonal) Beginning of the El Mirador expedition. During the following days until the return to Carmelita traveling will be done by trekking in the forest and horse riding on narrow paths open by chicle and Shate harvesters. There are no towns. Packs will be carried by mules and travelers will ride two per horse alternating walking and horseback riding. The trip takes between five and seven hours. Camp will be made near a watering hole (where the mules can drink). Our expedition will also use hammocks and mosquito netting to sleep. Day 3 Campamento-Nakbé Departure after breakfast. A journey from seven to nine hours to reach Nakbé, the first great acropolis in the Río Bec area to be visited. Nakbé hides an enormous mask ; 6 meters wide and 11 meters high recently discovered by archaeologists. Día 4 Nakbé-El Mirador During the morning the archaeological center will be visited. After this visit we will begin our journey for three of four hours. This stage takes place completely on a sacbé, roads built by the Maya for communication between their cites. We reach El Mirador in the afternoon. Day 5 El Mirador This day will be completely to visit the area and to relax to enjoy this magical place. In El Mirador is the location of the highest Mayan buildings constructed. The main pyramid is 97 meters high. The sunset and the rising of the moon in El Mirador is an extraordinary experience. Day 6 El Mirador-El Tintal Breakfast and departure for a long journey that ends at El Tintal. This strategic point, in addition to being a watering hole for animals, is another important archaeological site. Day 7 El Tintal-Carmelita-Peten Area This last stage will be shorter than the previous one, with arrival in Carmelita by mid day. After a week deep in the rainforest we will be able to enjoy the taste of a cold beer. Lunch at Carmelita and return by bus to Peten Area.
